Senior Editor
The role
Every biography we produce is checked against a published standard before it goes to the family. You'd be doing that check: reading each draft line by line against the sources behind it, and deciding what stays.
The standard is specific and public, so the job isn't a matter of taste — it's applying a defined test to each sentence. Freelance, remote, per-project.
What you will do
- Check every factual sentence against its citation. A date, a place, an occupation, a crossing — if the source doesn't carry it, it doesn't stay.
- Enforce the line between record and reading. Claims about character, motive, or inner life must be labelled as interpretation and tied to documented norms for that person's community and generation.
- Apply the confidence rule. Where support is thin, the draft says so or says less — certainty doesn't get manufactured to smooth a narrative.
- Cut anything added downstream. The draft may only contain what cleared the earlier stages.
- Handle corrections families raise, and see the approved version through to delivery.
Who this suits
Editors from long-form non-fiction, biography, academic publishing, or fact-checking desks. An eye for prose matters; being willing to cut good prose that outruns its evidence matters more.
Requirements
- Freelance and fully remote — no location requirement.
- Native-level English. Greek, or another language of the diaspora communities we cover, is useful.
- Editorial or fact-checking experience on non-fiction where sourcing was enforced.
- Willing to work to a published standard your output can be checked against.
About Lukeni
