The role

Families building a biography with us fill in a written questionnaire. Some of what matters most doesn't come out that way — it comes out in conversation, once someone is sitting across from them. Adding in-person sessions is an option families can buy, and we're hiring interviewers to run them in cities with established Greek communities.

You'd meet families in their homes, record the sessions, and hand the material back to the biography team. You're not writing the biography — you're making sure the person who does has something true to work from.

This is bereavement work. Families are often recently bereaved, and sessions can be emotionally demanding.

What you will do

• Run recorded interview sessions with the family, working through the structure the biography is built on — origins, character, and legacy.
• Follow what opens up. The structure is a spine, not a script; the material worth having is usually one question past the obvious one.
• Digitise family photographs during the session, so nothing has to leave the family's hands.
• Prepare beforehand by reviewing the family's submitted answers, and upload recordings and notes afterward.
• Keep everything confidential.

Who this suits

Oral historians, journalists, documentary researchers, chaplains, social workers, therapists — anyone practised at sitting with people in difficult conversations. Greek language or family connection is useful, particularly with older interviewees who move between languages, but it isn't required.

Requirements

• Based within reasonable travelling distance of one of the following:
  New York City · Chicago · Tarpon Springs · Los Angeles · Boston
• Able to travel to families in their homes and work around their schedule, including evenings and weekends.
• Comfortable with recording and scanning equipment, and reliable about uploading files on time.
• Discretion, patience, and an ear for what isn't being said.
