Freelance Historian
The role
We build biographies for families of the Greek diaspora, and every one is written against a documented historical baseline for the subject's community and period. We're commissioning historians to build that baseline for their own city and region.
The published scholarship covers the mainland and the major migration corridors. What it doesn't cover is the granularity families recognise — the specific quarter, parish, trade, or the year local conditions changed. That's the gap you'd be filling, on a per-project freelance basis.
What you will do
- Research the documented record of the Greek presence in your city and region — academic literature, community and parish records, municipal and consular holdings, local press, institutional archives.
- Establish period and community boundaries: who arrived when, into what conditions, and how those conditions shifted across a decade.
- Submit entries with citations specific enough for a reader to retrieve the source independently. Entries you can't anchor don't get submitted.
- Note where coverage is thin. We shorten a biography rather than fill a gap, so flagged limitations are as useful to us as findings.
- Substantiate your entries on request — everything submitted is audited before it enters the corpus.
Who this suits
Historians, archivists, and doctoral researchers working on migration, diaspora communities, urban social history, or the modern history of your region. Prior work on Greek communities is welcome but not required — knowing your city's archives, including holdings that aren't catalogued online, matters more.
Requirements
- Affiliated with a university or a recognised research institution.
- Fluent in English, with working command of the local language of the archives you'd use.
- Based in, or with regular working access to, one of the following:
Cairo · Alexandria · Accra · Harare · Dar es Salaam (with access to Arusha & Moshi) · Kampala · Johannesburg · Lagos
